It's a crucial date on the horizon for Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi as they gear up to be indicted in the cipher case come December 12. The drama unfolds in the Official Secrets Act special court judge's chamber in Adiala Jail.

In the courtroom, copies of the investigation report found their way into the hands of the accused. Imran Khan dropped a bombshell, stating his intention to call former army chief Gen (retd) Qamar Javed Bajwa as a witness, alongside a representative from the American embassy in Islamabad.

Legal theatrics ensued as the former prime minister's lawyers raised objections. They argued that the notification for the jail trial against Imran Khan lacked fulfillment of legal requirements, putting the brakes on the proceedings until a fresh notification surfaced.

Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqernain weighed in, citing the high court's divisional bench, which had given the nod to the appointment of the judge. Copies of the investigation report were then distributed among the suspects, but not without the judge expressing displeasure over the tardy arrival of Imran Khan's lawyer.

"I've been waiting for an hour and a half, but the lawyer did not arrive," the judge lamented. The lawyer, Usman Gul, defended his late entrance, blaming it on the fog.

During the hearing, Shah Mahmood Qureshi urged for an early start to the next hearing at 9 am. The judge, throwing the ball back in Qureshi's court, suggested it could happen if the former minister ensured his legal team arrived on time.

PTI lawyers Babar Awan and Shiraz Ranjha held their ground, joined by prosecutor Syed Zulfiqar Abbas Naqvi.

In a previous hearing, Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqernain set the tone, declaring that the proceedings in the cipher case would be conducted with utmost fairness. Qureshi, in his defense, questioned the nature of the trial under the Official Secrets Act, highlighting issues with security and the administration's failure to comply with production orders.

As the drama unfolds in court, one thing is clear – the trial of Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case is no run-of-the-mill affair. Stay tuned for updates on this courtroom saga.
